the exhibition of the tōkyō rika university architecture students works in the nakagin tower. they reflect on possible futures for the building through different operations. in total, six projects were presented. some works propose the union of several capsules to form larger spaces, the configuration of public space in the ground floors, the construction of a third tower of facilities, glazing systems that allow better ventilation, etc. all the works presented very interesting models and great quality drawings. here are some of them: posted in: uncategorised revitalizing with sosei partners: minami ashigara 2018-09-05 by postmetabolism leave a comment a few weeks ago i was able to participate in the project organized by sosei partners and sponsored by fuji xerox in minami ashigara, a rural region in the southwest of kanagawa prefecture. during 4 days we studied the area and proposed measures for its rehabilitation, of which we will speak next. as in the rest of rural areas of the country, the main problem in the region is depopulation: an increasing number of inhabitants choose to migrate to large cities, where job opportunities are larger. this leads to a rapid aging of the population, and to a progressive lack of social cohesion. the cities of the region have some festivals and attractive places for tourists, but the difficulty of arriving by public transport means that the number of them is not as high as one would wish. all this can be seen in the almost empty streets, and in the large number of abandoned farming areas. abandoned farm in yagurasawa district to carry out this project we focused on studying two districts: yagurasawa and kataura. yagurasawa is a district dedicated above all to agricultural production, with rice, tea and other crops. several rivers supply these fields, some of them abandoned to a different extent. in the area there are many empty buildings, which is a municipal problem: these buildings are in privileged locations near the farms, but their owners now live in other places, so the city cannot offer them for rent to new tenants. in addition, current regulations make it very difficult to build new homes, as new constructions are prevented in the narrow streets that currently make up this city, until they are adequate. these two factors mean that, despite suffering serious depopulation problems, it is difficult to allocate housing for rent or tourism. abandoned building in yagurasawa district for the near future, the construction of a stretch of highway that passes through this area and connects tokyo with other cities to the west it´s planned , so it is a good opportunity to draw the attention on this place. the other area that we studied is the district of kataura. it is an area near the sea with a privileged landscape, several farms, and some very interesting proposals carried out by several groups. one of the most interesting is directed by kiyama-san, who guided us through the place. efforts are being made to introduce ecological systems in homes and farms that generate the least possible waste, such as the photovoltaic plate systems that the collective tries to install in the homes in the area. but the most striking activity is the permaculture garden cultivated in the fields of the district institute, above the mountain. in this garden, water is collected from nearby rivers and stored in a tank after being cast by a natural system with gravel of different diameters. for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits, no pesticides or similars are used, and the pruning remains are used as biomass. the products cultivated here have a certain fame within the area, and the organizers give workshops for locals and outsiders. kataura´s permaculture garden other workshops related to agriculture and permaculture are held in the district, although there is no clear connection between them, which may reduce the interest of the neighbors in participating. views from kataura district another very interesting initiative that we could meet is “root farm” (https://root-farm.com/), a system of crops monitored with cameras in real time. the owners of the plots can see at any time the state of their crops, “talk” with them (through a very attractive application that interprets the status of the plant and translates it into emoticons of a character in the application), control the irrigation , etc. the application is also updated with events and photographs of animals raised in the area near the farms. root farm at the moment, this system is limited to a small area of the district, but with the budget and adequate labor, it can be applied to larger areas. connecting citizens of large cities with crops in rural areas has great potential, and many people are interested in this system. with all this information, it was time to reflect and debate about the strengths and weaknesses of these districts, enumerating and trying to give concrete answers to each of them: we divided the team into two groups, each working in a district. in my case, i worked with the yagurasawa district group. to elaborate our proposal, we received the help of a local guide who helped us to know better the farms, which ones were abandoned, the irrigation systems, and the most favorable zones to carry out our ideas: fieldwork with neighbours in the farms of yagurasawa district the main problem we could detect was the lack of social cohesion: the progressive emigration of the neighbors and the lack of public space projects led to an absence of community feeling, which makes even fewer people choose to stay, and the people from outside do not see inducements to live in these areas. to answer, we decided to propose a community garden in one of the areas of abandoned farms closest to the main river. these gardens encourage the participation of the neighbors in their maintenance, and the space not dedicated to cultivation is used for other community activities such as film screenings, debates, etc. cultivated products would be sold at the local store, in the center of the district, and advertised so that they would be visible from the highway built soon. in this way, we would try to revive the feeling of community, while at the same time attracting the attention of the outside public. for the process we take as reference other projects carried out in italy and spain. reflection on yagurasawa and proposed spot all these ideas were exposed on the last day to the mayor of the city, councilors, neighbors and media. the proposals were quite accepted, generating very interesting debates. to carry out this process, it is needed a platform where neighbors could freely express their ideas and wishes for the district, in order to give them form. to begin, we asked the public that went to the exhibition to write their ideas in papers that we would later review. this conference marked the end of this stage of the project, but it is the starting point of a process that is expected to last several years. the reflections and proposals that we launched in this first stage should materialize in concrete actions that can help the rehabilitation of this interesting space. this work involved students and professionals from many countries, with predominance of japanese university students, which is a cultural
